About Turmeric
A herbal root related to the ginger family, turmeric is an earthy spice long celebrated for its anti-inflammatory properties and use as an all purpose treatment in Asian and Middle Eastern culture. The root is packed with packed with curcuminoids, the bioactive compounds responsible for turmeric's rich golden hue and medicinal properties.
Oxidative stress and inflammation contribute to the development and/or progression of most (if not all) chronic conditions. Therefore, it's no surprise that consumption of curcumin, a powerful anti-inflammatory, has been documented to relieve a broad range of chronic conditions, such as eczema, arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. In fact, turmeric is one of the most widely studied spices, with over 15,000 manuscripts published on its benefits.
On top of these properties, curcumin yields many anti-bacterial, detoxifying, and gastrointestinal properties.
- Boosted immunity
- Reduced symptoms of inflammatory conditions (e.g. eczema, acne, inflamed joints)
- Digestive aid
- Relieves stress and helps you relax
However, consuming high potency curcumin itself is not enough to reap its potential benefits. Curcumin has biological properties that makes it poorly bioavailable - it is rapidly metabolised and excreted, and very little of it gets absorbed into the body. To combat this, we've paired our turmeric with black pepper. Piperine, an alkaloid that gives pepper its bite, drastically increases curcumin's bioavailability (absorbed >20x more effectively versus turmeric without black pepper).
We've also included a broad set of sweet and fragrant spices in our Turmeric Latte Superfood Collagen Elixir, such as ginger and cinnamon (two other foods well known for their anti inflammatory properties), and cardamom (the main fragrant in chai).
